I have a different type of memory. My kids think it is "weird", and my Grandkids probably think I am nuts. The fact is, I can remember a lot of junk about a lot of seemingly insignificant things, but forget the important stuff, like when I am supposed to be somewhere, or your address. Ask me how many cubic inches a 1968 Caddy motor was (472) or who wrote "It's Raining Men" (Paul Schaffer from the David Letterman show), and I can tell you, whether I ever need that information or not.
Remember, I wasn't born yet in 1941, so I have no first hand memory of Pearl Harbor. I know millions of Americans remember it vividly, seeing it only in their mind's eye at the time, creating pictures in their minds based only on second hand accounts from others, or if they were lucky, based on hearing radio accounts of the attack's aftermath. In half a day's time or so, they would have several written accounts of the horror, including pictures, from the local newspapers.
By the time I was born, pretty much everybody had a TV. My generation also had the added benefit of knowing the outcome of both the day and the ensuing war. There were hundreds of movies about Pear Harbor Day, and I suppose I saw most of those, but even as a kid I knew that movies were works of fiction, for my imagination only, and not to be taken as the truth, even if they were portrayed that way.
So, I am not being heartless when I say Pearl Harbor Day holds no particular significance in the annals of my memory. As far as forgetting the significance of this day, I don't . It is important historically. Plus, since the attack was only a few decades ago, there are millions living today who will never forget this day, so until they are all gone, Americans will always remember, first hand. It is not just "History book" information to them, nor should it be. But when I think of Pearl Harbor, my brain clicks and like some sort of malfunctioning computer and I think December 7, the USS Arizona....then I think my Brother in Law Brad's Birthday is December 7th too, and off to trivia land I go.......I told you, I have different kind of memory, I just seem to be wired differently. I am OK with that.
