Do you ever just want to jump into a game because it looks like fun, without knowing any of the rules? What if the consequences of the game were serious, say...life and death? Still wanna jump right in?
So, the question at hand is if we want to live forever? No other rules were specified, so I would initially say no. Who wants to live with their head in a jar, and no body, like a cartoon character from Futurama? Not me. Wanna live forever if you can not hault the aging process, so anything after, say, 80 or 90 is bed ridden, or veggie, or worse? Me neither. What if the rules of the game include having to eat only food you hate? Or being abstinent? Nope. Me neither. What if this classic “devil’s bargain” included outliving your kids? Or living in perpetual excruciating pain? Or in prison? Or homeless for the next thousand years? Still wanna live forever? Still don’t care what the rules of the game are?
I would only agree to live forever if I could set the rules. Who wouldn’t? I am not talking about the Christian "forever", or existing on another plane, or reincarnation, or my soul living forever. I am talking about flesh-and-blood alive, breathing. On good old Earth, right here in the U.S of A. If I could do that, and I could take my family along with me, all of them living forever as well, and stay in good health for an adult of any age, not just for a man of “my age”, I might wanna stick around.
Just think of all the knowledge you could gain. Humans are constantly learning (at least MOST of us are...I have my doubts about as few folks I have met), so a 500 year old would have the benefit of unimaginable knowledge. Eventually I might understand how to effectively end war, or feed the world for free, or supply infinite renewable energy. I sure would like to try. There are a couple problems though. If others had the same gift, overpopulation and all it’s associated issues (crime, etc) would be a major problem. Maybe a bunch of wise old folks could figure that out. The biggest problem is, I wouldn’t do it without my wife and kids, and they couldn’t put up with me for that long.
