The Feast of the Hunter's Moon

The feast of the Hunter's Moon is a local event in Tippecanoe County Indiana.  It is a local phenomenon where we live, and gets huge amounts of press coverage every year. It takes place at an old Native American/French trading post in West Lafayette Indiana each fall.
I suppose I have been to the “feast”, as the locals seem to call it, but I can’t remember when.  Just a few weeks ago, while my Wife and I were providing chauffeur service for our 16 year old Granddaughter to Fort Ouiatenon (the home of the "feast") , we were discussing the last time we had attended the actual event.  We pretty much agreed that neither of us has attended in the nearly 30 years we have been together. I don’t think I mentioned this one in front of my Granddaughter (I hope I didn’t), but  I do recall, in the years before I met my Wife, an incident related to fort Ouiatenon, (sort of)....  In about ’81 or so, a couple friends and I (I believe one friend was named Jack Daniels as I recall) were enjoying a night out, and our decision making skills were not quite what they should have been.  It was a warm summer night, well after dark, when one of us decided we needed to go on a trip down the river.  Our friend Jack must have been doing the talking most of the time, because we had come to the consensus that a float trip of some kind, in the dark, with no equipment, and impaired motor skills, was a great idea.  Then we somehow got the stroke of genius to start our trip at Fort Ouiatenon.  I don’t know why that was such a good idea, but it seemed to be at the time. I feel sorry for the poor kid who was driving the car (he was sober but apparently not a good decision maker either).  We kept giving directions to him, “turn here”, “we must have missed it, turn back”, “slow down, I think we’re here” and the like.  Problem is, we drove around till almost dawn, talking to our friend Jack, and never did find Fort Ouiatenon (lucky for us).  Never did the float down the river, then or since.  Maybe the Gods that the Native Americans believe protect them were watching over that Fort, and still are.  Funny thing is, I haven’t been in that condition for over 25 years, and I still can’t find Fort Ouiatenon when I want to go there.  I nearly got lost just dropping the grandkid off.
