Some folks change jobs several times in their lives, some seem to latch onto one job and keep it for life. Most folks are somewhere in the middle, no doubt, (including me), but I fall a lot closer to the “one job for life” group. I worked at K mart for a few years as a youngster, spent a bit of time at a couple local hardware stores, and worked several years at the Lafayette School Corp as a Janitor, but for the last couple decades I have had the same employer. Sure, the tasks my employer has assigned me to accomplish have changed over the years, but I suppose it is still the same “job”, same employer.
I got married pretty young in life, and our family grew quickly. For me, whether I liked a job or not was secondary to whether or not it paid the bills. I had kids to support, so, in my mind I couldn’t afford the “luxury” of looking for a new career path and starting all over. When I finally landed that factory job I thought I had it made. If I could do the work required, I could feed the kids. Maybe I could work my way up the ladder there, make a career of it. Over the last 18 years or so, I have been a production laborer, a coordinator, a supervisor, and a buyer, along with several other tasks that did not necessarily have a permanent title. I learned something from them all, and all of them provided a paycheck. I have been lucky enough to meet several good people along the way, and learn about their lives, their cultures, their hopes and dreams.
I am lucky. I haven’t had to look for a job in nearly 20 years. I get to go to work every day even in this economy. My kids are all grown, and they did not starve along the way. They always had a roof over their heads. What is the best job ever? The one you have now, whatever it is. There is always something good you can get from it, whether it is a paycheck, a good friend, or knowledge and experience. At least that’s how it has worked for me.
