My Wife will be the first to tell you I am hard-headed, but I am a pretty loyal guy. (Actually a VERY loyal guy). Maybe I am confusing hard-headed with loyal, but once I make up my mind, I tend to stick to my decision. For example, I have never changed favorite sports teams in my entire life. They can shove their precious Colts, Pacers, or Boilermakers down my throat all they want, but I don't like being force-fed, and my resolve against them only becomes stronger. Is that loyal? I like to think so. I chose my team, and I will root for them, through thick and thin, no matter what anyone else does to try and convince me another team is better to root for for some reason.
See how my pea-sized brain works? Living someplace other than Lafayette worked exactly the same way for me. Despite not being the happiest kid in school, and feeling "left out" socially most of my life, I never wanted to live anyplace else. Not really. Our extended family is in the Lafayette area. Now, as middle aged folks, our kids and grandkids are all in this area. No reason to move. I was born here (Home Hospital), went to school here (Edgelea, Tecumseh, Jeff). I drove to College while still living here. My wife and I were working together at the old K Mart store at 52 and Teal road when we met. Why move?
When we packed up all our stuff and moved from our little rental house in Lafayette in the early '80s to rural Mulberry, and finally within a couple years to our home in Rossville, my Wife probably thought getting me to move was like pulling teeth. I kinda saw it as disloyal to Lafayette, ("My" city), and the Jeff Bronchos ("My" school). My Wife Carol is a Rossville grad, and she just could not fathom why I would have trouble adjusting to life in a new town. I suppose in my mind, living in Rossville was like "cheating" on my chosen city, my chosen school. Carol was right though. Deciding to settle down permanently in Rossville was an excellent decision. The schools are top-of-the-line, and the crime rate compared to Lafayette is non-existent. Rossville is a great place to live and raise a family. We are still in "greater Lafayette". This is as far from Lafayette as I have ever lived, and hopefully as far as I ever will.
